It will just likely about the same requirements whether you are in the Philippines or in Taiwan.Since you said you are working in Taiwan, take time to consider how long do you still have to work in Taiwan based on your work contract. You may be already back in the Philippines by the time your interview will come.Processing time for K-1 visa range from 8 months to 2 years. If around that time frame you will still be in Taiwan, then it will probably be more convenient for you to have your interview done in Taiwan. You will need to provide though documents from the Philippines like your birth certificate and Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) issued by NSO and an NBI Clearance.

Should I work here in the U.S., or teach in Taiwan

Should I work here in the U.S., or teach in Taiwan?
Hello to all, I am thinking of going to teach english in taiwan. I have graduated with a degree in sociology, and I am stuck working a cubicle job. The money and people are nice, but I feel like I need a change. Any advice is helpful.

It depends on where do you work at this point and whether or not you feel like you are getting the most out of your degree. The choice to do so depends on your situation. Pray through it and see where God wants you to go.
2 :
Strange format for a question from someone with a degree in sociology...no details about who you are and yet you are asking for a sociological type recommendation? I am guessing high school student. I recommend you get a real degree in teaching then go to Taiwan.

HAving traveled to taiwan in april of 2008, I would whole-heartedly recommend it! Not just to taiwan but to any country abroad. BUt taiwan changed me. It was such a life-altering experience--everything from the culture to language to food to everything. it was just simply amazing and i think even if it doesn't pay as well it would give you such a neat perspective on life ! good luck!

How good are US relations with Taiwan?
I know that US-China relations arent exactly at its best, but does anybody have any idea of US-Taiwan relations? I am contemplating starting work for a company thats headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan. I just dont want my work experience to looked down on if I were to move to the US later.

I would expect that your experience in Taiwan would be considered positive, not negative. You will understand the region much better than most of the other paople in the company where you work. I expect that your experience in Taiwan will be a psoitive for you, not negative.
4 :
Taiwan is not communist China..... go for it ..... It will enhance your resume and put another language in your expertise which will be very valuable in the future..... good luck
5 :
The relationship between China and Taiwan is surprisingly good. I'm an ex pat from the USA living in the heart of China. Every year or so they dust off their sabers and rattle them at each other, then put them back and go back to normal trade, tourism and diplomacy. I suspect it is to appease the haters and for Taiwan to get more military bucks from the USA. China claims Taiwan as a province and has threatened to take military action if they claim independence. This has been going on for almost 60 years. At one time this was a real threat, but no longer. Taiwan recently lost a bid for membership in the UN, the UN said they had no legal bounds. Affectively putting the question of Taiwan's sovereignty to bed. As far as the relationship between Taiwan and the USA, it is good. I would not worry about that being a black mark on your resume'. I maybe a little concerned with a Chinese company on my resume', however, consider this. China is a top country for the west to invest in. It is not a good idea to measure a countries health on what talking heads and governments say, but rather how much investment in the countries future is. China has a very stable government and society, so for business, it is a safe long term bet for investment. Therefore, any company that has any experience in the far east would understand the above and probably look at you as an asset. Peace Jim .

Electrical or electronic engineering

Electrical or electronic engineering?
Hi, I am planning to take electrical engineering in the University of British Columbia (UBC). With electrical engineering, can I work in electronic and computer companies such as Asus, Sony, HP, etc or am I limited to working in companies that produce larger electric systems? Because UBC only have the traditional engineering such as civil, mechanical, and electrical so it does not have electronic engineering. Is it better to go with electrical or electronic engineering? I'd like to work in Taiwan where many electronic hardware are made.
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Electrical engineering is better . A more rounded education. The primary focus is on theory. You can concentrate on electronics if you like with the few free electives you will have.
2 :
Electronic engineering falls underneath Traditional EE. When you start your degree at UBC I am sure there are pathways to take that will lead you to electronic engineering. For example at UCLA there is Electrical Engineering with the following pathways: Integrated Circuits, Solid State Electronics, Power Engineering... Etc. If you choose IC's or Solid State, you will be an electronic engineer. its all the same stuff. dont worry. A degree in Electrical Engineering will get you where you want to be
3 :
I started at the U of Alberta in electrical engineering and found all they really taught was power generation and distribution. I wanted electronics and changed schools. That decision cost me about 20% of my future lifetime earnings but I was doing what I really wanted to do. Now, over 30 years later I live in LA and I design DSPs and PWM amplifiers for the professional audio industry for just under $100K a year. I am also on the board of directors of a background music company in Vancouver. As for working in Taiwan the normal process is to work with an importer that sends youover there for a couple weeks every couple months. Immigrating there is almost impossible unless you were from there originally. But you will be free to get a TN visa to work in the USA. After all, there are lots of things to design besides the cheaper consumer electronics. I give my all for Rock and Roll here in LA. I also have a patent on the control system for a field litchen heater that was designed for the US Army. THere is a lot more to the business than what Future Shop sells. So do whichever you like. Just be aware that there is almost no electronics engineering work in the west, some in Toronto but huge amounts of it in the US.

Work Permits Employers who wish to hire foreign nationals to come and work in Taiwan are required to first apply with the Council of Labor Affairs to obtain a work permit for the foreign nationals they wish to hire. A work permit application form must be submitted in Chinese and requires recent passport photos of the person and supporting documentation such as photocopies of the candidate's CV, passport (picture page), employment contract, health certificate from a pre-approved hospital, proof of education, and proof of previous work experience. Please note that certified Chinese translations are usually required for all foreign-language documents. The work permit application review process takes approximately two weeks. Once the application is approved, the work permit -- a formal government-issued letter of approval -- is sent by registered mail to the employer. The letter, which serves as proof of permission for the prospective employee to undertake employment in Taiwan, is required for the resident visa application.

There are only a few categories of jobs open to foreigners in Taiwan. For more details, see this online forum -- http://forumosa.com/taiwan/viewforum.php?f=70

However, the brand of USB tuners that I got (Uli m2905; marketed by Items Tech. of Taiwan/Honestech) worked on other computers/another laptop. My laptop is on XP SP2, Celeron 1..5 Ghz, 256 RAM and has 2 USB 2.0 ports. If I can't have the device work, I'll be forced to sell it and try to get another brand (I'm thinking of Leadtek). I live in the US, but I'm working in Taiwan for the summer. I want to buy Starcraft 2 on release date, but I read there are restrictions as far as which multi-player area you get locked into. If I buy a copy of SC2 in Taiwan, but go back to the US, will I only be able to play on the South-east Asia servers? Is my copy "locked into" South East Asia? I know I have the option to digitally download the game, but my internet in Taiwan is extremely slow, so it's not really feasible to download. FYI, I just want to play skirmishes / single player until I get back to the US. Thanks.

hallo, The 15 Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. All these countries except Norway and Iceland are European Union members. what are the steps in getting a schengen visa?where could i get? All depends on the place(s) you want to visit. If you intend to visit only one Schengen country, you must apply at the Embassy or Consulate of that particular country. You apply at the Embassy or Consulate responsible for the state where you live. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country which is your main destination. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries but do not have a main destination, you should apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country which is your first point of entry. thus, contact the embassy. use this link, choose your destination country and then on the right choose the country you are living now. then you'll see embassy contact information. http://www.visahq.com/embassy_row.php
3 :
Fraginal & Julii are right so far. The question is: What kind of Schengen visa you need. As a single pinay it is quite rough 2 get 1 if it would be for tourist purposes. In that case you only would get one if a first grade relative ( mum, dad, sis or bro ) or a person who is linked to your relatives will sponsor you. If you use a travel agency there would be also a chance. If you think you can as a private trip for sightseeing. Sorry but no chance. - If it is for working purposes. France, Denmark & Norway are seeking officialy for skilled workers in the Philippines at the moment. So if you are in the healthcare business or good in IT go ahead and apply for a visa.

I'm not sure I can tell you the differences to your culture, but I can tell you what I've noticed in the week I've been here. People touch you alot more, both men and women... so don't mistake that for sexual advances. People are really friendly and very helpful and are always happy to see you, even if youre like me and look foreign (I'm white). Anyhow, I think you're really going to enjoy yourself here, I sure am.
2 :
There are lots of difference in culture cause Taiwanese are Chinese and Filipinos are Filipinos. Just by looking at this, you will see a lot of difference in lifestyle and cultural heritage. Anyway, Taiwanese are friendly and nice people to talk with. You can find some bloodlines between the aborigines groups in Taiwan and the Filipinos however.
3 :
They are nice and friendly people, I've been there a couple of times. Always had a great time visiting my friends there.
4 :
I think most of Taiwanese are friendly. Sometimes we will be afraid of stranger because the public security is not good recently in Taiwan and some of Taiwanese do not familier with your country, culture. So if you met someone cold on you , do not be sad it just because we do not familier with you. Taiwanese like help anothers. And I think the weather in Taiwan is quiet like your country, our winter is not very cold and more than half year we are in summer. I very recommend Taiwanese food. Now, Taiwan has many foreign labor open their country's shop. So I think you will not feel lonely. It is difficult to live in other country no matter what reason. But I think optimistic will overcome everything. Hope everything will be excellent on you.

Don't expect too much. Your Mandarin skills are worth next to nothing. It's a myth that speaking Mandarin is of much importance in the working life in China. China has already quite a number of Mandarin speaker and the demand for Mandarin speaking foreigners (which often have problems reading and writing) is really not that high. It does make your private life much easier though. What they need is any sort of skill other then language that you are good at.

Now you either get a qualified tax attorney on this case instantly, or do without a job, passport, etc, and above all, without any money or assets.
2 :
The nation to which you are seeking to work in will handle the visa. The IRS could prevent you from leaving the country if they have approval, which one would think improbable in your case. Expect to work there. Especially if you make an arrangement with the IRS to repay them a small amount each month. Prepare in advance. Remember the Seven P's of the Armed Forces of the United States of America: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pathetically Poor Performance.

Re entry to Taiwan under alien residence card( ARC)

Re entry to Taiwan under alien residence card( ARC)?
Hi, I am working in Taiwan. Me and my wife both have the alien residence card(ARC) with multiple entry. Two months back she went to home country (India) and now she is coming back to Taiwan. What are the documents she need if any or just passport and ARC is what she need and of course air ticket :)

When we first started going to Taiwan, I was amused by the fact that my ARC (green card) was actually green. On the older-style cards, you used to have to get a "Re-entry Permit to the Republic of China" in your passport. The new style ARC cards include a re-entry permit. Your wife will only need her passport and her ARC to get into the country.

There is probably hello kitty there but not a lot. theres more hello kitty in japan.
2 :
they do have a lot of hello kitty but hello kitty is from japan taiwan makes many things but they are famous for their snacks
3 :
I would say Taiwan has lots of great snacks, especially famous for their "tai yang ping" or in English Sun Biscuit. It's a little sweet, not too sure whether you would like it. And of course, there is another snack called "tie ji dan" which is some type of egg.
4 :
You can get a lot of Hello Kitty stuff for sure... BUT the coolest thing you can get are the t-shirts. They have hilarious t-shirt with bad English on them. Chinglish if you must (I mean no harm, lived in Taiwan and I love it!). I have a pic of one that says "I <3 Naked".
5 :
Your may consider Chinese Knots, Chinese Opera masks, Chinese Paper Cuts, Chinese Clligraphy & etc... Google them for more info.
6 :
Aboriginal arts and crafts make interesting souvenirs. Here's a link to some photos of finer craftswork. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunbeck/sets/72157611716988954/ Small hand-made products such as keychain fobs, cellphone covers, coin purses, etc. are also available. Very decorative, and representative of the earliest culture in Taiwan.

Please provide more information on the type of work you are looking for. I have a Taiwanese friend who runs an "employment agency" that processes ARCs (green cards and work visas) for foreign workers, as well as a sister-in-law who works in a job-placement office of the Taiwanese government. Perhaps they can help you. Edit: Thanks nomad.

I am working in Japan. It is fairly easy for a forienger to get a job here.....If you have a university degree..... If you want to be realistic, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, parts of India and Hong Kong have the best salaries and job markets in Asia....And you've already knocked off half of those options. Try an internet job site or ask for advice from various embassies or immigration websites. They'll give you all the information you want to know.

And who you work for will determine your salary. If you work for an expat organization, you'll make nice money. If you work for a Malaysian organization, you'll make local salary.

I think Vietnam is good. Not just because I am from there but because over there it is more easy because it is cheap or maybe less expensive. It is easy to get a living there. They are also international & hospital. More welcoming. Thailand is another place I would go to.

Will a phone that works in Hong Kong work in India

Will a phone that works in Hong Kong work in India?
I have a phone that works in Hong Kong and Taiwan when you purchase a local SIM card. Will this phone work in India? Is it cheaper to use a local cell phone in India or just use a calling card, if calling to the USA? How available are public phones? I will be traveling to Bangalore, Mysore, New Delhi, and Agra.

Normally the fones using SIM card in Hong Kong will work in India for sure. But be sure to take the ADAPTER to plug in your fone's charger in India. You can get this adapter for 5 $ in Chungking mansion. If you want to call US from India, using your cell fone or VOIP services. Lot and Lot of private STD/ISD booths are available throught the nation and you can use them for your International calls.
2 :
GSM quad (4) band phone with international roaming will work in India. Else, you can use a local sim card in India. Make sure your phone is network unlocked in Hong Kong before you try switching sims of another cellular provider.
3 :
Use VOIP services or buy calling card. You can see both options here: http://calling-cards-international.com/
4 :
Public phones are available at PCOs.The phone will work but the sim may not depending on the type of sim such as that of Hutch (roaming) For cheaper calls use local sim.
5 :
. Hong Kong cell phone should work in India. Use a local sim card AirTel / Vodophone (Hutch) for local calls and international. I think AirTel is charging about 7 to 8 Rupees per minute to call U.S. from India. There are few centers to call on VoIP. You will find plenty of public calling telephone booths in every nook and corners of India to make local and internation calls. Here they will charge you about Rupees TEN for a minute to make an international call. While using the cell phone for local calling, please be aware of roaming charges. B'coz you will be moving around in different states of India. FYI: Bangalore/ Mysore, New Delhi, and Agra are located in three different states of India. Have a nice stay in India. .

How many years of experience are required for foreigners to work in Hong Kong? How many years of experience are required for foreigners to work in Singapore? How many years of experience are required for foreigners to work in Taiwan? Thanks! Primarily, the problem is I graduated from college May 2008, so up until now, I only have 1 year of full-time work experience. The country's government will give you a work permit as long as you've secured a job in some company. At least that's how it is in Singapore. I imagine the case would be similar in the other countries. From the company's point of view, as long as you fulfil their requirements, they'll be glad to hire you. If you apply for an entry position, of course not much experience is needed. But if you apply for the position of a Director, obviously you'll need lots more experience.

How do you use a FarEas Tone VOIP adapter to call Taiwan? I just brought it back and can't get it to work...?
Do I connect to my router? Directly to the modem? Do I use the WAN or LAN outputs from the device? Do I need to reset anything on my internet/router settings? I only have instructions in Mandarin, and I don't read/speak a bit!

When hooking up any VoIP adapter, it is a must to have the User Manual (in a language you understand). There are many configuration inputs required to configure a VoIP adapter with BYOD VoIP services (bring your own device). The only time you wouldn't need the user manual is if the VoIP ATA (analog telephone adapter) is "preconfigured" with only 1 service provider, and you have already paid for VoIP service with that provider. In this case, they pre-configure it for you in advance. In this case, it should be "plug and play". Whether it needs to be behind a router or in front of the router just depends on whether the ATA has its own built-in NAT-Router. If it has built-in NAT-Router, then it should be connected directly behind the Internet Modem on the WAN side, then your network router can be connected to the LAN side of the ATA. If it doesn't have a built-in NAT-Router, then it of course needs to be placed behind your existing NAT-Router. In this case, your NAT-Router will need to be configured to Port-Forward or Port-Trigger the appropriate SIP VoIP ports required to enable VoIP packets to pass without being blocked by the Firewall. You need your manual to determine this info. Typically, SIP VoIP requires ports 5060-5061 UDP to be forwarded from router. It also required RTP (Real Time Protocol) ports to be forwarded. Which ones depends on your ATA requirements, but typically can be in the port range of 10,000 - 20,000 UDP. A good resource for learning about the basics of VoIP and port forwarding can be found on CQVoIP.net website and blogs.

Hi, I got a European Wii console 220Volts pal version. And im going to my friends in Taiwan where the power is 110 Volts. Can i just plug it in and play games or do i need to buy something to make my Wii work in taiwan? I got already a different powerplug to match their connection. Please explain simple i have not much experience in power technology. I want to take with me also the pal games. But Tv's here support NTSC and PAL so i guess in taiwan also right?

Your Wii won't work in taiwan it's not just the power cables, European Wiis use PAL Taiwan uses NTSC so unless you take a television from Europe you won't be able to play it.
3 :
you can look at the power supply or the back of the Wii where the cord plugs in if you see something like this 110~220 volts you will be fine and you will only need a plug adapter, that symbol means your Wii will auto switch voltages. If you dont see that then you will need to get a power converter or transformer. A lot of travel shops will have what you need. I dont know if there is a radio shack where you are but they will also have it, and so will a company called brookstone

Most of fortune 500 companies are presenting in Taiwan. You can try to call them whether they offer any job vacancies in Taiwan office. Tawian has lots of demands for foreigners to work locally, especially for those who are good at communication and management skill. You can negotiate with a very good package(salary, house, and other benefits)as a expatriate to work at Taiwan. I belive you will have a very good time there.

"VISA easily"? I have never heard of such a thing. In reality it is a long, often excruciating process full of bureaucratic paperwork and setbacks. You've just listed 5 different countries. Each with their own set of rules on Visa eligibility. You have also neither mentioned your past work experience nor what area of focus you would consider. Sales? Technical Writing? Network Administrator? A more useful approach would be to narrow down your focus to 2, no more than 3 countries. And come up with a career position. Repost when you have more specific objective in mind.

Wasn't Japan the last legal owner of Taiwan

Wasn't Japan the last legal owner of Taiwan?
Seems to me that Japan owned Taiwan for 50 years. How did China get it back? Didn't the ROC people run away to Taiwan as a "Government in Exile," institute martial law for 40 years, steal the land, enslave the people, impose forced conscription into the military against the Geneva Convention, deny human rights, etc. so that they could teach Mandarin to the common Mandarin and convert everyone into "Chinese"? You'd think the PRC would be grateful for that. Why are they still angry at the ROC for having done the same dirty work in Taiwan that Mao was doing in China? Is there any chance the die-hard Chinese will ever go back home, and just let the Taiwanese and those immigrants who have grown to love the island be Taiwanese? I think they failed to finish the job. typo - should be ... teach Mandarin to the common people... The ROC leading in and then PRC now attempting to back them up is a bit like Mussolini trying to take Africa and having to call on Hitler to help finish the job. Anyone ever look at that from the perspective of the Africans? Maybe the Africans liked the French better. @Dan - Can you show me a copy of those terms of surrender? @HowJ - The matter WAS taken to court, back in 1959, subsequent to the San Fransisco Peace Treaty. {Significantly, in a 1959 court case (Sheng v. Rogers) in the United States, the US State Dept. was specifically quoted as maintaining that: " . . . that the sovereignty of Formosa has not been transferred to China . . . " and that "Formosa is not a part of China as a country, at least not as yet, and not until and unless appropriate treaties are hereafter entered into. Formosa may be said to be a territory or an area occupied and administered by the Government of the Republic of China, but is not officially recognized as being a part of the Republic of China.} http://www.taiwanbasic.com/nstatus/shengvs.htm I agree that the ROC played a crucial role in defending Taiwan against the PRC, during and after the loss of Mainland China. The Taiwanese remain eternally grateful for this, despite the cruel methods employed by the ROC in usurping sovereignty of the people here. However, they had retreated to a "sanctuary", a neutral island, still under US Military Government jurisdiction. for some 20 years now, the ROC has moved toward accepting its true responsibilty to the people of Taiwan who received them as "guests" here. I am firmly against having to go through this painful process again, should the PRC succeed in having its bogus claim to the island accepted by the world community. The Taiwanese have a right to self-determination and sovereignty over their land which has long been denied to them. It is far past the time to stop foisting the Chinese Civil War onto innocent people who had nothing to do with it. If the Yankees had chased the Rebels into Mexico, would it mean that upon their defeat, Mexico would then belong to the USA? @sailor8 - Those might be in reference to the disputes over the Spratly Islands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spratly_Islands

1 :
That is correct. In 1895 Qing Dynasty signed Treaty of Shimonoseki which agreed Taiwan and surrounding islands were to be ceded to Japan in perpetuity. ***Taiwan has ceased to be part of China from that point on*** The claim "Taiwan has always been part of China" is false. When Japanese surrendered at end of WW2 they left Taiwan. ROC led by KMT, represented the Allies of WW2 to accept the Japanese surrender. The Japanese did not specifically name that Taiwan be handed over to ROC. Some fancy the idea that USA can claim ownership to Taiwan because USA's military intervention resulted in Japanese loss. That is correct again, "government in exile". ROC's occupation in Taiwan and claims of ownership of island can be debated. Illegal? Let's take it to court. In any case, Taiwan was never ruled by PRC. When Taiwanese want independence, they mean independence from ROC China, but certainly not PRC China.
2 :
These questions should get asked and answered a lot. Japan was a "legal owner", insofar as a victor's surrender demands are "legal". That's like saying Nazi Germany, after the surrender, became the "legal owner" of France. The Republic of China regained control of Taiwan in 1945 when (under the terms of the surrender), all nations were to return any land seized by military means. You can say what you like, but were it not for Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist government of Taiwan, the place would be ruled from Beijing this minute.
3 :
Call it a crap, rubbish, garbage, lies, baloney & etc...
4 :
First, I know of no Treaty that has been signed by the US as vague as what Dan says. Any treaty this vague would lead to problems before the ink dried. I think if Dan thinks about what he said he would agree. As for Taiwan, if any other countries agreed with China there would not be this talk of if it belonged to China or what ever China says today. Every year China claims something else from some other country. I read in today's new there are 5 countries in southeast Asia who are going to file international violations against China. They were told by China these problems could be worked out between each country and China on a one to one basis but there seems to be more to the problems than China is agreeing to discuss. The nations listed were Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia Borneo and the Philippines. How can the Philippines have problems with China over islands? Has any body looked at a globe? This would be like the US claiming the Canary islands today.
